10 December - Volubilis and Meknes

On the road from Chefchaouen we stopped to visit an olive oil pressing factory. It was amazing to see many of the locals turn up on mule or on foot with bags of their olives ready for pressing.

We also stopped at the oldest Roman ruins in Morocco at Volubilis. We had a great walk around and were amazed at the lovely mosaics that still existed nearly 2000 years later.

We also stopped at Meknes - an ancient walled city. The walls are 4-6 feet thick and entirely surround the city.  It also has its own man made lake inside the walls in case there was ever a war and they needed to survive for a long time.

Our accommodation in Fes is in this amazing Riad (which is a home that has no windows to the outside, but has a courtyard on the inside where the windows face and where the fountain is) and which we would never have found if we didn’t have a guide. The Medina is very narrow and confusing.
