11 December - Fes medina

The Medina war an amazing maze of narrow streets and alleys. Some were so narrow, at times we thought we were stepping into someone’s yard but it was another walkway.

Each street is a theme - there was the street for copper smiths, the street for bridal gowns, the street where people dyed clothing, the street of cedar wood craft, the street of food. Every street was different. Some were a bit scary, but with our guide we got to see many interesting mosques, the University and houses that are about 900 years old. Without getting lost!

The people were nice and not too pushy. Of course if you take their photo, many want to be given “baksheesh” - a tip.

The tannery was interesting. It is where they prepare the animal hides (skin) before it is made into jackets, bags, shoes or furniture. Quite smelly, but much worse in the summer heat. We were lucky that it winter and didn’t smell so bad.
